Channel 5 had recently adopted the Eggheads TV show and commissioned OnePoll to run some research amongst the UK public, to find out their perceptions about pub quizzes and how they think they would fair being on the quiz show, Eggheads.
Firstly, OnePoll worked through the suggested questions and made sure that they were changed to adhere to the MRS Code of Conduct. Questions included, how confident respondents were at taking part in pub quizzes and any follow-up questions about taking part in pub quizzes, were only shown to those who had previously done this. Other questions asked what respondents’ strongest subjects would be on a pub quiz, replicating the categories that Eggheads use, and an open text question on what they thought the best pub quiz team name that they had ever heard was.
Once the questionnaire had been designed, it was sent out to our UK adult online panel to complete. 1953 responses were collected and analysed. Some of the results showed that over three quarters (77%) agreed that pub quizzes are a British cultural institution, 47% said their strongest subject is general knowledge and almost a fifth (18%) would take part in the TV show Eggheads.
Some interesting responses to the best pub quiz team name included “Quiz Akabussi”, “And the winner is…” and “Let’s get quizzical”. The variety of responses is a showcase of how the pub quiz name is a British staple.
OnePoll provided data tables and included all the free text responses for analysis.
